GROUP WORK
Talk About Your Secrets?
It’s hard enough to share your problems with one person, but now you must tell everyone? No way are you going to open up! You make an agreement with yourself that “you will suit up and show up – that’s all!”
As you are sitting there, stiff as a board with arms akimbo, a person across the room starts talking – and you find yourself nodding your head in understanding. How does she know how you feel? How can she hurt like you hurt? The names and facts are slightly different, but she is telling the story of your feelings and emotions.
How is that possible? You are not like these people.
Or, are you?
Why Group Work?
Group therapy can be a good motivator in making changes in your life. As you grow comfortable in a group setting, you can allow yourself to relate to the people around you. There is support and understanding from the other members. There comes a sense of belonging and of knowing you are not alone in your situation which helps relieve some anxiety about opening up and sharing in group.
You are no longer just listening to the voice in your head but taking in different perspectives on how to move forward in your own life. You do not have to struggle through discovery / recovery alone. Group work may help you.
Why not give it a chance?
Journey Begins Counseling, Inc. provides various specialty groups. Each group has a common focus but the participants can be so unique – single/married, male/female, retired/career-oriented, children/no children, and so on. This bit of uniqueness does not shield you from what you have in common, the issue that brings you to the group. Members are in groups to learn new coping skills, ways to handle stress, how to deal with life on life’s terms without turning to substances, high risk decisions, or unhealthy behaviors.
Willing to give it a try? It takes courage to be open and honest with people you barely know. Your insights just might be what the next person needs to hear.
“They may forget your name, but they will never
forget how you made them feel.” ~ Maya Angelou

Anger Management
Anger is a completely normal and usually healthy human emotion. We all experience it, but it is how we react to events and circumstances around us that can cause problems. It can come about when we don’t get what we want, lose something we have, or people don’t behave like we think they should. When it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems in relationships, at work, and in the overall quality of your life.
“Anger is a sign that something needs to change.” ~ Mark Epstein
Whether you are here for personal reasons or mandated by the court, this group helps establish personal boundaries and provides tools for coping with situations that frustrate and irritate on a daily basis. Continuing to deny you have a problem in your life will only provide opportunities to display more unpleasant behaviors and hurt those around you.
This program is based on a cognitive-behavioral and psycho-educational approach with a goal of changing thinking and behavior processes. Anger is a Choice. Being aware of choices will help you to make better decisions and also manage your anger.
Some topics and coping tools covered in the curriculum include:
Anger Styles & Origination | PAUSE & ACT |
Anger Self-Talk | Stress Management |
Assertive Communication | Triggers and Habits |
Empathy Skills |
Addiction
Ever consider that you might have a problem with alcohol or other substances? Do any of these consequences feel familiar: loss of money, friends/family, job, self-respect, emotional instability, freedom, or health? Asking for help now can reduce the possibility of losing any of these prize possessions.
Facing legal issues that require you to attend a court-mandated substance abuse treatment program or just seeking help voluntarily, either path can lead to a future of recovery and skills to enable you to make better decisions, live a more carefree and productive life with endless possibilities.
Poor decisions made while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs might have consequences that end up a lot worse than expected. Stop struggling and find freedom from substance use issues.
Journey Begins Counseling, Inc. offers the American Society of Addiction Medicine Program (ASAM Level I Short- and Long-Term Treatment) and is a registered Treatment Provider for the DUI Intervention Program for the State of Georgia, Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
